Savings accounts in Tokyo and Japan

Looking for a savings account in Tokyo, a high-yield savings account in Japan or the best online bank in Japan? Savings rates change often, so we don't list them here. Compare the current rate on each provider's own site before you open an account.

In Japan, taking deposits is limited to banks licensed under the Banking Act. Electronic money and prepaid balances fall under the Payment Services Act instead, and they are protected differently from bank deposits. Both kinds of provider appear in the Financial Services Agency (JFSA) registers. The same check applies to business accounts such as Airwallex: confirm the provider's registered category with the JFSA before you deposit yen (JPY).

To move money in or out, a Japanese domestic transfer (furikomi) needs the bank and branch name, the account type (futsu or toza), a 7-digit account number and the account holder's name in kana. Transfers run over the Zengin network.
